A Pictorial History of Our Black Community
(904) 824-2872The Oldest House Museum Complex presents A Pictorial History of the Black Community in St. Augustine & St. Johns County. This photography exhibit includes work from contemporary photographer, Lenny Foster, and 20th-century photographers, Richard Twine, and John Jackson.
Lenny Foster engages Lincolnville's Black community sites and members. Three of his acclaimed collections, In the Spirit of Lincolnville, Where Dreams Became Memories, and Porch Portraits pay homage to the Black people of Lincolnville and the county — those who live here now and those who came before.
Lenny Foster was inspired by Richard Twine, who captured Lincolnville in the 1920s, and John Jackson who photographed Lincolnville and West Augustine from the 1960s through the 1980s.
John Jackson was a teacher in St. Augustine and a prominent member of the Catholic Church. His photographs documented the daily lives of his community: their celebrations, jobs, homes, and schools.
The photographs of Richard Twine, John Jackson, and Lenny Foster tend to honor regular men and women as they lived, worked, and participated in community. Mr. Twine and Mr. Jackson captured weddings, church services, school sports, and family picnics, and their photos have provided a valuable glimpse into each era. Lenny Foster's work also honors the common man and woman, offering today's perspective as he looks back to those who came before us.
To complete this look at photos from the past and today, the exhibit will also have a display featuring camera equipment from different eras.
