500th Anniversary of Ponce de Leon's Landing This Wednesday

  • This Wednesday marks a pivotal event in the history of North America and the City of St. Augustine. On April 3rd, we celebrate the day Juan Ponce de Leon landed on the shores of our beautiful state, making him the first European to set foot on Florida soil.

    The day will be filled with celebration as we commemorate 500 years since Ponce de Leon's landing.

    This milestone is monumental! It's a day filled with memorable events you won't want to miss!
    Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013
    9 AM

    Be at the Bridge of Lions as Ponce de Leon comes ashore in a reenactment of the first landing. The Castillo de San Marcos National Monument will be firing off cannons to celebrate his arrival.
    10 AM

    Gather at the Plaza de la Constitucion, the town square between Cathedral Place and King Street, as a wreath is placed at the statue of Juan Ponce de Leon. Speakers include Mayor of the City of St. Augustine, Joseph Boles, Mayor of the City of Santervás, Spain (the birthplace of Ponce de Leon) Santiago Baeza Benavides, and a special blessing given by Bishop Felipe Estevez, of the Roman Catholic Diocese of St. Augustine.
    11 AM

    Join the first parish at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine for worship as Bishop Estevez celebrates a commemorative Mass for Juan Ponce de Leon's landing. At the Mass, Bishop Estevez will bless the new baptismal font, a replica of the font Ponce de Leon was baptized in, and a gift from the city of Santervás. Representatives for the State of Florida as well as representatives from Spain will be present for the celebration.
    12:30 PM

    Head to the Lewis Auditorium at Flagler College, located at 14 Granada St., as the United States Postal Service presents the commemorative La Florida stamp for the State of Florida. Representatives for the State of Florida as well as representatives from Spain will be present for the unveiling.
