History of the Changing of the Guard Ceremony: During the days of fortifications, militias, and early exploration the settlements popping up along the North American coastline needed protection. The townspeople who chose to settle in the fledging port towns required surveillance at all times and the Changing of the Guard Ceremony facilitated this protection. One guard came to relieve the one at post all the while both maintained a watchful eye on the seas.
