In 1564, Frenchman Rene de Laudonniere, one of Ribault's lieutenants in the 1562 expedition, established Fort Caroline near the mouth of the St. Johns River. Artist Jacques Le Moyne had joined Laudonniere and rendered drawings of the various people and places he saw. In 1565, Spanish attackers, led by Pedro Menendez, captured Fort Caroline. La Moyne and Laudonniere were among the few who survived the attack and returned to France.
