Lucas Vazquez de Ayllon established the first named European settlement in what is now the continental U.S., San Miguel de Gualdape. Ayllon's party consisted of 600 settlers including 100 enslaved Africans. Sickness, harsh weather, Indian attacks, and low supplies plagued the settlers and after Allyon's death from fever 3 months after arrival, the 150 survivors abandoned the settlement forever. Located between S.C. and Virginia, the exact settlement site is not known.
