Panfilo de Narvaez, Spanish Conquistador, led a failed expedition to Florida in 1527. Narvaez's expedition landed at Tampa Bay with 300 men in April 1528. Most of the expedition died, including Narvaez, due to Indian attacks, sickness and, finally, drowning when Narvaez attempted to sail back from Florida on rafts built by his men. Only 4 men survived, returning on foot to Spanish colonies in Mexico in 1536. They included Cabeza de Vaca and an African slave, Esteban.
