Tristan de Luna y Arellano established a Spanish settlement in today's Pensacola, Florida. Along with a town planned at Santa Elena, it was intended to provide an overland trade route between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. On September 19, 1559, a hurricane destroyed most of the vessels and supplies. The settlement was abandoned by early 1561 less than two years after its founding. Spanish settlers would return to the area 135 years later - in 1696.
