The Castillo de San Marcos presents a special Candlelight Tour on Saturday, November 12, 2016, entitled "The Great Escape: A Seminole Story." The tour focuses on the historical event in the fall of 1837, when over 230 Seminoles were captured and brought to the Castillo as prisoners. Twenty of these prisoners subsequently escaped from the fort under mysterious circumstances.

The National Park Service presents these tours in honor of Native American Heritage Month. The guided tours, led by park rangers and volunteers, take visitors back through time to explore this fascinating event, as well as the legacy of the Seminoles and the impact that the escape has had on history.

The Castillo de San Marcos National Monument is the oldest stone fortification in the United States. The park offers candlelight tours monthly to allow visitors to take in the special beauty of the Castillo at night.

Admission: The tours are free, but do require tickets for admission. Space is limited, so interested guests are encouraged to reserve in advance by calling (904) 829-6506, ext. 233.
