Flagler College's 2015 Community Lecture Series begins on Tuesday, January 20, at 10 a.m. with a discussion of the universal human desire for adventure and exploration.

Dr. Brenda Kauffman, Flagler College assistant professor of Social Sciences, will present the topic, "The Outbound Voyage: Sailing Ships to Commercial Spaceflight." The lecture will examine the search for adventure throughout history, with examples ranging from China's Zheng He's naval expeditions to the Spanish Crown's Columbian voyages to 20th-century America's moon expeditions.

The discussion will include the politics, economics and ideals of historic seafarers, and how these past journeys may influence future exploration. A list of readings relevant to the topic that will help those interested prepare for the discussion is posted online at www.flagler.edu/communitylectures.

The Flagler College Community Lecture Series began in 2007 to offer the St. Augustine community an opportunity to explore topics covering arts, religion, politics, culture, history, economics and more with experts on the Flagler College faculty.

With the 450th Commemoration events occurring this year, the Community Lecture Series will focus throughout 2015 on the theme: Exploration: Passions, Implications and Reflections

Lectures take place monthly. Tickets are $5 per person for a single lecture, or $15 for four lectures. Active military personnel may attend at no charge. Lectures begin at 10 a.m. in the Flagler Room at Flagler College. Space is limited, and reservations are required.
