Peter Rowan in a tall white cowboy hat, outside on a prarie

Peter Rowan

Peter Rowan's career spans 50 years, and includes several hit songs, like "Panama Red."

Peter Rowan, a Grammy-award-winning bluegrass musician, is a singer/songwriter who plays the guitar and mandolin. From Massachusetts, Peter often visited The Hillbilly Ranch—a Boston nightclub during his youth. This country music nightclub featured acts considered old-time in the 1950s, such as Tex Logan and the Lilly Brothers.

From a musical family, Peter listened, learned, perfected his skills, and like many others before and after, formed a band while in high school. Unlike most aspiring high school musicians, this was the start of an amazing career.

Next to the reconstructed building at 22 St. George Street, this walled garden once helped feed a local family and protect them and the city from intruders.

The garden was first restored as a lush garden area in 1966 by St. Augustine Restoration, Inc. and the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs.

More recently, it was restored by the University of Florida, which added informational plaques, an old map of the area, and trees for shade. Ribera Garden is used for several events, including hosting a display of Florida agriculture with a cracker horse and a cracker cow.
