As part of the Flagler College Forum on Government and Public Policy, Pulitzer prize-winning, and Emmy-award winning producer/correspondent, former New York Times reporter, and bestselling author, Hedrick Smith will present the lecture, "Putin, The U.S. and The New World Order," on Thursday, February 2, 2023 at 7:00 p.m., in the Lewis Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.
Dating back to 1971-1974, Smith's book, The Russians, stemmed from his years as The New York Times Moscow Bureau Chief. While in Russia, he spoke to Russian citizens — from people living in poverty to bureaucrats to artists and officials. He immersed himself in their culture and witnessed the shifts that encouraged glimpses of hope, documented in his revised book, The New Russians. Once harmless, Putin emerged during this time and his rise, along with other ideologies resembling the West that slowly went awry, are themes associated with the inquisitiveness regarding Russia's own future, their war in Ukraine, and its impact on a future relationship with the United States.
In order to fully begin to comprehend the present, enabling a prediction of what may come, a comprehensive understanding of the past is a big piece of the puzzle. Smith acquired this knowledge through not only his work in Russia, but also his fifty years, covering leadership roles and affiliated obstacles such as; the Martin Luther King, Jr. and civil rights movement, the Middle East conflicts, the Vietnam war in Saigon, and the Cold War.
