Nature and science are the topics for a special evening kayak tour that begins at 7:30 p.m. every Friday through September 29, 2023, at the Guana Dam at the GTM Research Reserve. Those on the tour with with the guides and naturlists from Geotrippin' will view the beautiful bioluminescence found in these waters, and learn about how current research about the green fluorescent protein and bioluminescent DNA are contributing to scientific advancements.
More than simply a natural tourist attraction, the flora and fauna in and around Guana — one of only 30 estuarine research reserves in the country — provide a natural science lab in which researchers can learn more about water quality and the weather, marsh vegetation and how it can positively impact our coastlines, oysters, and plankton. During this adventure, kayakers will be able to observe the beautiful bioluminescence that can be observed in the lake, and learn more about recent scientific studies and what they mean for the disciplines of medicine and natural science.
For example, scientists have found ways to learn from and use the bioluminescent DNA and green fluorescent protein to provide information on the molecular world, including the discovery of a shift in the evolution of life on earth. The experienced Geotrippin' tour guides will share information of interest to both amateur naturalists and those seeking more scientic information to "nerd out" over recent scientific breakthroughs.
