Identified as "America's First and Oldest Wax Museum," Potter's Wax Museum has more than 160 wax figures on display. The characters range from musicians and artists to presidents and kings, from Cleopatra to Princess Diana, and much more. At Potter's Wax Museum, meet Queen Victoria, Austin Powers, William Shakespeare, and Harry Potter—all in the same location.
About Potter's Wax Museum
This unique attraction was founded more than 75 years ago when George L. Potter began the business in 1949. He employed some of the finest talents in the world to make his wax figures, after meticulously researching every aspect of the person being depicted, right down to each freckle on the skin and hair on the head. The costumes of the original figures were created by B.J. Simmons and Nathan's, Ltd., the finest costumers of their day, and certified for historical accuracy by the British Historical Society.
The Museum Today
Located at the Oldest Drug Store, you can check out the antique cash register, bottles of old-time remedies, elixirs, and tonics before buying your ticket to Potter's Wax Museum.
From the drug store, step into a world of wax figures of early Florida residents, historic figures, former stage and screen stars, and current celebrities such as Taylor Swift.
In total, there are 10 galleries: Ancient History, European History, Florida History, American History, World War II, Arts and Culture, Science, Government, and Celebrities (which includes sports icons).
Except for fiberglassing the body, the figures are designed and created at the wax studio on site. See how they sculpt, paint, and dress the figures when you visit the museum. To make for more authentic figures, the museum's costume collection features hand-made antique garments.
Most of the figures are displayed so you can interact with them. Photographs are not just allowed—they are encouraged. This is your opportunity to grab a selfie with Swift, Elvis, and Einstein. There are new, interactive displays that include sound and some flashing or strobing effects. If you are traveling with someone with epilepsy or photosensitivity, please contact the museum in advance so they can make accommodations.
Potter's Wax Museum is located at 31 Orange Street, inside the Old Drugstore in historic downtown St. Augustine.
Group tour rates are available for 10 or more people. Contract design and sculpture services for theme parks and attractions are also available. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit their website.
The museum is open seven days a week, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It's open every holiday except Christmas Day.
