"Old Senator" is over 600 years old and grows in the courtyard of Villa 1565 on San Marco, just a short distance from historic downtown St. Augustine.

According to the website "Monumental Trees," in 2016 "Old Senator's" girth measured over 21 feet and "his" height was over 56 feet. Long considered to be St. Augustine's oldest resident, "Old Senator" could certainly tell many stories about St. Augustine's history and people.

If you like natural wonders or have an imaginative mind, take 15 minutes to see this! The sense of age & permanence around this tree is awesome, in the original meaning of the word. Sorta sad the HoJo & parking lot surround it so closely, but they do provide benches for gazing/reflection & a enough nighttime lighting to see the lower branches. Visit during daylight tho' to see much more--there's an entire ecosystem, including other trees, in its branches! Use the lot's back exit & turn left to drive down Magnolia Ave. too. It's been pictured in "old South" calendars & photo books: blocks of moss-hung live oaks seem to enclose the street in a serene time bubble from the past. Turn left again at Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth & you'll intersect San Marco Ave., where you started.
