On Friday, January 15 at 7:30 p.m. A Classic Theatre presents Light and Noise and Bees and Boys, performed as a staged reading. The performance is at the Center for Spiritual Living, on Old Moultrie Road.

Staged Readings

A Classic Theatre presents four staged readings during the 2026/27 season. This year, ACT enlisted knowledgeable theater lovers, who read hundreds of unproduced plays submitted for production. The readers chose four plays based on creativity, originality, and compelling stories.

Each performance begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Living, 1795 Old Moultrie Road in St. Augustine.

Considered the "purest form of theatre," staged readings have no sets, props, or light cues, and have limited or no costumes. The actors use a script, and necessary stage directions are read to help the audience understand what is happening. The actors rehearse each program, focusing on the script and their delivery to bring the playwright's work to life for the audience.

The Play

The play's title, Light and Noise and Bees and Boys, is a quote from Stephen Sondheim's song, "Evening Primrose: I Remember." The line inspired the playwright, Duncan Pflaster, who used it as a starting point for his newest political drama. The four characters are a middle-aged couple in Boca Raton, the husband's mother, and her current partner. The mother has had a stroke and cannot remember the past 30 years, including that she had come out, is a lesbian, and that her partner is a woman.
