The Ponte Vedra Concert Hall will present Grammy Award-winning guitarist Eric Johnson as he returns to St. Augustine on his "Classics: Present & Past" tour on Thursday, March 12, 2020, at 7:30 p.m.

Eric Johnson has been recognized as one of the world's preeminent electric guitarists for years now. He grew up in a musical household in Austin, Texas, and began playing the piano at age five. Six years later, he took up the guitar, inspired by bands like the Beatles, Cream, and Jimi Hendrix, who were at the top of their careers at that time. His influences expanded to include such diverse guitarists as Django Reinhardt, Jerry Reed, and Chet Atkins. Johnson began honing his tone and technique as a session guitarist for Cristopher Cross, Carole King, and Cat Stevens.

Johnson has toured widely throughout his career. The last time he came through Ponte Vedra, it was to promote his latest album, EJ, which is his twelfth album as leader. The album reflects his talents as a singer-songwriter as well as his ability to bring together well-respected musicians such as guitarist Doyle Dykes, violinist Molly Emerman, cellist John Hagen, and longtime Johnson accompanists Tommy Taylor and Wayne Salzmann on drums and Roscoe Beck and Chris Maresh on acoustic bass.

Johnson's 1991 album, Ah Via Musicom, became a crossover hit and reached platinum status. The track "Cliffs of Dover" from that album earned him the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance that year. Ah Via Musicom loosely translates to "communicating through music."
