  • Festival of Chariots, or Rathayatra, is an annual event celebrating Indian and Hindu culture. The festival will be celebrated in St. Augustine on Sunday, March 9, 2022, with two colorful parades, live entertainment, vegetarian food, dancing, art vendors, and more.

The Rathayatra festival originated in the ancient city of Jagannatha Puri in India to celebrate the Hindu Lord of the Universe.

Visitors can view the vibrant Festival of Chariots parade in St. Augustine's downtown area along King Street, beginning and ending at the Plaza de la Constitución. In past years, the parade has taken place from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Times are to be announced for 2022.

A walking procession called Harinam will begin along St. George Street (traditionally at 1:00 p.m., but the time for the 2022 event has not yet been confirmed) with colorfully-garbed participants singing and dancing as they proceed down to Cathedral Place and the Plaza, where a cultural program will take place after the procession.

In addition to the parades and other festivities, the festival features a vegetarian feast highlighting Indian cuisine, music, a dramatic presentation, art vendors, a magic show, face painting, henna tattoos, and much more.

Visitors can attend this festival celebrating the many dynamic threads that make up St. Augustine’s local culture. This cultural event is fun for the whole family and it is FREE.

    Admission: Free.
