As part of the Flagler College Forum on Government and Public Policy, author Raymond P. Scheindlin, Ph.D., will present the lecture, "Wine, Women, and Death: The Worldly Pleasures of the Courtier-Rabbis of Islamic Spain," at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 9, 2022, in the Virginia Room, which is on the 2nd floor of the Ringhaver Student Center. The event is free and open to the public. 

A professor at Medieval Hebrew literature at the Seminary, former professor from McGill and Cornell Universities, as well as visiting professor at the Hochschule für jüdische Studien in Heidelberg and Harvard University, Raymond P. Scheindlin is a former Guggenheim and Cullman Fellow and a recipient of the Cultural Achievement Award of the National Foundation for Jewish Culture. 

An author of multiple books, Dr. Scheindlin has written Wine, Women and Death: Medieval Hebrew Poems on the Good Life (Oxford University Press, 1986); The Gazelle: Medieval Hebrew Poems on God, Israel and the Soul (Oxford University Press, 1991); The Book of Job (Norton, 1998); and The Song of the Distant Dove: Judah Halevi's Pilgrimage (OUP, 2007), and others. Most identifiable to him is Scheindlin's 2016 book titled, Vulture in a Cage: Poems by Solomon Ibn Gabirol (Archipelago Books, 2016). 

Trained in Arabic literature at Columbia University and in Hebrew literature at the Jewish Theological Seminary, Raymond P. Scheindlin, Ph.D., specializes in the translation of Hebrew literature and poetry with special interest in the Hebrew and Arabic cultures in Spain.

Flagler College's Forum on Government and Public Policy brings nationally recognized journalists, commentators and speakers to St. Augustine to discuss issues at hand in regional, state and federal government. This forum has promoted intellectual talk about government and public policy for over 30 years at Flagler College.
