In the years after the Civil War, the U.S. transformed from being an agrarian country to one with a bustling industrial economy. The population shifted to cities, the country's boundaries expanded, and citizens, pundits, and historians questioned how America's identity was changing. Sculptures and paintings in the museum's collection highlight those changes and how American artists of the time documented and interpreted the new society, spirit, and character of the young nation.
