Ideas and Images Speaker Series
International artists and speakers come to Flagler College to deliver presentations on diverse topics.
Ideas and Images: Visiting Scholars and Artists program from Flagler College presents the speaker series titled Race and the American South: St. Augustine in Context This series commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964.
February 20, 2014 presents the lecture, "Portraiture, Politics, and the Documentary Impulse of the Photography of Chris McNail". This lecture is presented by Dr. Bridget Cooks, Associate Professor at the University of California, Irvine.
Dr. Cooks' research focuses on African American art and culture, Black visual culture, museum criticism, film, feminist theory and post-colonial theory. In 2002 she earned her doctorate degree in the Visual and Cultural Studies Program at the University of Rochester.
She has received a number of awards, grants and fellowships for her work including the prestigious Henry Luce Dissertation Fellowship in American Art in 2000. Some of Dr. Cooks' recent publications can be found in American Studies, Afterimage, Exposure, The International Review of American Art, African American Review, Studies (Center for the Advanced Study of the Visual Arts, National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.), Pedagogy, and the International Journal of Media and Cultural Politics. Her first book entitled, "Exhibiting Blackness: African Americans and the American Art Museum", was published in 2011.
About the series: Flagler Colleges Ideas and Images series features an international composition of artists and authors, each introducing a fresh and creative component to the community. This season the series will host special programs focused on the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and St. Augustine's role in that era.
