International artists and speakers come to Flagler College to deliver presentations on diverse topics.
Ideas and Images: Visiting Scholars and Artists program from Flagler College presents the speaker series titled Race and the American South: St. Augustine in Context This series commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964.
February 6, 2014 presents the film, The Loving Story. This film is presented and partly funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities' African-American Experience Film Series. The Loving Story, a documentary film, tells the story of Richard and Mildred Loving and examines the drama, history, and current state of interracial marriage and tolerance in the United States.
This film explains the story behind the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case, Loving v. Virginia (1967), in which the court found unanimously in the Lovings' favor. The ruling overturned statutes against interracial marriage in 16 states. The Loving Story is an Augusta Films Production. It was directed by Nancy Buirski, produced by Nancy Buirski and Elisabeth Haviland James, and edited by James.
About the series: Flagler Colleges Ideas and Images series features an international composition of artists and authors, each introducing a fresh and creative component to the community. This season the series will host special programs focused on the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and St. Augustine's role in that era.
