International artists and speakers come to Flagler College to deliver presentations on diverse topics.
Ideas and Images: Visiting Scholars and Artists program from Flagler College presents the speaker series titled Race and the American South: St. Augustine in Context This series commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964.
April 3, 2014 presents "Black Society in St. Augustine". This lecture is by Dr. Jane Landers, Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Professor of History at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Landers s an historian of Colonial Latin America and the Atlantic World specializing in the history of Africans and their descendants in those worlds.
She is the author of Atlantic Creoles in the Age of Revolutions (Cambridge, Mass., 2010) which was awarded the Rembert Patrick Book Award and honorary mention for the Conference on Latin American History's 2011 Bolton Johnson Prize for the best English-language book on any aspect of Latin American History.
About the series: Flagler Colleges Ideas and Images series features an international composition of artists and authors, each introducing a fresh and creative component to the community. This season the series will host special programs focused on the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and St. Augustine's role in that era.
