Ideas and Images: Visiting Scholars and Artists program from Flagler College presents the speaker series titled Race and the American South: St. Augustine in Context This series commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964.

March 25, 2014 lecture presents "Chains, Roots, and Wings: Race and the American South." This presentation will be delivered by Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist, Leonard Pitts. Pitts works as a columnist for the Miami Herald and is also a published author. Among his many recognitions and awards he won the Pulitzer Prize for his commentary in 2004.

His column with the Miami Herald is read by thousands and highly regarded. His articles and commentary on everything from family relations, race, political issues, and more delve into the more emotional side of things. He is a respected and accomplished columnist and writer.

Pitts is also the author of the novel Before I Forget is novel about three generations of black men bound by blood and their histories. Pitts explores the reality of black men's lives, especially as they play out in the burdened relations of fathers and sons. Pitts will speak as a part of the Ideas and Images series at Flagler College.

About the series: Flagler Colleges Ideas and Images series features an international composition of artists and authors, each introducing a fresh and creative component to the community. This season the series will host special programs focused on the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and St. Augustine's role in that era.
