The Blues and Beyond in African Musical Heritage

The Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center presents Flagler faculty member, Dr. Scott Swan, who discusses and demonstrates "An Exploration of the Blues Impulse in African American Musical Heritage." This free presentation is from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., on Friday, February 27, in the Excelsior Room on the second floor of the Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Heritage Center.
Dr. Swan earned a PhD in Ethnomusicology from Florida State University. A multi-instrumentalist, Swan's main instruments are guitar, harmonica, and piano, with a background in soul, blues, jazz, and folk genres. Swan's thesis for his master's in Anthropology was "Music is My Vessel," focused on the musician Lavell Kamma's example that explores African American musical heritage.
On February 27, Dr. Swan discusses and presents music that demonstrates how the blues has influenced African American music, including its cultural roots, how southern African Americans used the blues to express hardship and resilience, and how that music spread.
