My wife, brother-in-law and I discovered this place 10 years ago and found it quaint a decade ago. It had the old town hanging tree with lots of shade. It had a carport to park the motorcycles under in the worst weather. It had a pool by the road which was great for people watching. The rooms were reasonably clean for an old motel and the rates weren't too bad 10 years ago. But times change, motels upgrade, accommodations get renewed; amenities are added to keep guests interested in coming back. But not these folks! OH NO! The managment does nothing to freshen up the place: no microwaves or mini-fridges; no hair dryers for the girls, no hot water for the non-coffee drinkers among the guests. In fact, they have done NOTHING new of any sort for the last 10 years. We have asked for nothing more than hot water for our morning tea (not everyone is a coffee drinker). NOPE! We asked for a microwave in the lobby. NOPE! The manager, says he has a pacemaker (which, incidentally, Mr. Manager, microwaves are not a health hazard; a cell phone emits more microwave energy up close to your brain). We have had to bring along our own power cord adaptors because they have no 3 prong outlets. We had to bring along our own methods to brew our own tea (insulated pot and heat coil). We have stayed there a least a few times a year for all that time. We have had to accommodate to them, not the other way around. None of our requests have ever been honored. We were in St Augustine for a few days in January 2012 and there were no hangers in the room, so I went down to the lobby to gather up a few and was told that I was lying; that there were hangers there. Finally, the custodian had to be sent to our room to verify the lack of hangers before we would get any hangers. I guess that we are just gluttons for punishment, but we finally encountered the last straw. We went to check back in on Thursday, April 26th, 2012 and lo and behold, they have closed the pool. CLOSED THE POOL! It's hot and humid; we'd been on the road all day on the bikes and the pool is closed. The manager says that there is some state law going into effect in the future and it's just too much trouble to maintain, so they are going to tear it down. WHAT!!??? How are they going to compete? Hence my beginning comment. I think these folks just don't want to be in the motel business anymore! I hope someone knows the owners of this once fine motel and has a few words with them, because otherwise, this place is on a rapid downward spiral. Old town St Augustine deserves better!
