Ponte Vedra Beach

The Brumos Companies presents the WJCT 3x5 Classic Film Festival at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall. This festival will last from March 28 - 30, 2014 and is a celebration of the art of cinema and features some of the most terrific films produced from the 1930s through the 1970s. This event is also sponsored by WJCT in order to bring about a greater appreciation and understanding of classic cinema.

Friday, March 28: The festival will kick-off with an opening night reception at the Ponte Vedra concert Hall featuring piano jazz performed by John Thomas. This exciting reception will be followed by the nights feature presentation, Citizen Kane. This classic movie is hailed as one of the greatest of all time! Citizen Kane is a 1941 American drama that was directed, co-written, produced, and starred Orson Welles. The movie follows the life and legacy of Charles Foster Kane through flashbacks. Kane, played by Welles, is a character based in part upon the American newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, Chicago tycoons Samuel Insull and Harold McCormick and aspects of Welles's own life.

Saturday, March 29: Three feature films will be screened, beginning with the classic Wizard of Oz at 2 p.m. This movie is the classic film adaptation of the 1900 novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. This movie has become a part of American popular culture and is widely known and loved. The film was produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1939 and tells the tale of a young girl named Dorothy who travels to a magical land called Oz. Also: Visitors are encouraged to arrive early for this family-friendly matinee and participate in the fun, entertainment, food, and the costumed contest for the best Wizard of Oz character!

5 p.m. - The classic, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington will be screened. Viewers can enjoy the controversial yet successful movie starring Jimmy Stewart. This 1939 American political drama was directed by Frank Capra and was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, winning for Best Original Story. This movie tells the story of an up-and-coming senator, Jefferson Smith, played by Stewart. The naïve senator immediately comes up against political corruption but will not comply with their demands.

8 p.m. - The Big Sleep starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. This film follows the process of a criminal investigation and its many winding twists and turns. This classic is the first film version of Raymond Chandler's 1939 novel of the same name. Bogart is hired as a detective to uncover gambling issues for a very wealthy family and before the film is over Bogart has seen murder, blackmail and may also have fallen in love.

Sunday, March 30: The film festival will close with the film, Notorious, the 1946 Alfred Hitchcock thriller. This film stars Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman and Claude Rains. The movie follows the lives of three people who become forever intertwined. Bergman is asked to spy on a group of Nazi friends in South America but the closer she gets to her friends the more dangerous her task becomes. This film was a landmark for Hitchcock; representing a heightened maturity in his films.

Visitors will enjoy this fun and historical tour through movies from the past decades! Viewers can see again or for the first time classics that have served as cornerstones of American film-making since their releases.

Parking Information: Parking will be available onsite. There will be a $5 parking fee for ticketed events and for free events parking will also be free. For events not produced by the St. Johns County Cultural Events Division, parking fees will be at the discretion of the event producer.
