Spanish Wine Festival 2017: Batalla de Vino
Saturday, October 21, 2017, 6:30 - 7:00 p.m. at St. Augustine Shipyard
The Spanish Wine Festival presents the Batalla de Vino, one of the most popular events of the festival, from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2017. This event recreates the Spanish tradition of the “batalla de vino,” a traditional part of Spanish festivals dedicated to making wine.
The Batalla de Vino may well be one of the biggest wine fights in America. Each participant wears white and receives keepsake protective sunglasses as well as the use of a wine squirter. The goal is simple -- turn the white clothes of all the combatants as red with wine as possible. The Batalla is held during the Festival's traditional pig roast, the Cochinillo Asado.
The Team Batalla competition will go first, from 6:30 to 6:45 p.m. Teams of five (men and/or women over 21 years old), squirt wine at the kings and queens of opposing teams, while doing their best to protect their own king or queen. The team whose king or queen shows the most white at the end of the battle is the winner.
After the team competition, the Grand Batalla de Vino will be held (from 6:45 to 7:00 p.m.) This is much more of a free-for-all, and a great opportunity to squirt friends and strangers with wine!
This event is part of the Spanish Wine Festival, an annual festival that raises funds for three local charities: St. Augustine Record Empty Stocking Fund, K9s United, and tag! Children's Museum of St. Augustine.
Admission: Team Batalla tickets are $100 for a five-person team. The Grand Batalla (individual competition) is $10 per person. Visit here for more information and to purchase tickets.
