The Play

A Classic Theatre presents Butterflies are Free, from Friday, March 6, through Sunday, March 15, 2026. Friday performances begin at 7:30 p.m., Saturday shows start at 4:00 p.m., and the imaginary curtain rises at 2:00 p.m. on Sundays.

Leonard Gershe wrote the comedy, which was first produced on Broadway in 1969. He had been inspired by the true story of a young blind lawyer who strived to be independent. In the play, Don Baker is an aspiring songwriter who moves into his own apartment in New York and meets his neighbor, a young, free-spirited actress. Mrs. Baker, Don's overprotective mother, does not approve of the actress and her relationship with Don. The play has been described as "hilariously touching," with themes of independence, love, and family.
