On Friday, October 16, at 7:30 p.m., A Classic Theatre presents After, a play by Mike Ackerman, performed as a staged reading. The performance takes place at the Center for Spiritual Living, on Old Moultie Road in St. Augustine.

Staged Readings

A Classic Theatre presents four staged readings during the 2026/27 season. This year, ACT enlisted the help of knowledgeable theater lovers, who read hundreds of unproduced plays submitted for their consideration. The readers chose four plays based on creativity, originality, and compelling stories.

Each performance begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Living, 1795 Old Moultrie Road in St. Augustine.

Considered the "purest form of theatre," staged readings have no sets, props, or light cues, and have limited or no costumes. The actors use a script, and necessary stage directions are read to help the audience understand what is happening. The actors rehearse each program, focusing on the script and their delivery to bring the playwright's work to life for the audience.

The Play

After, by Mike Ackerman of New York, New York. This three-act dramedy has three characters: a middle-aged husband and wife and the administrator assigned to prepare them for the afterlife. The wife, Daisy, is denied entry, and the three of them work to figure out what life changes Daisy must make to join her husband. The playwright won the Grand Prize in the 2023 Slamdance Screenplay Competition for his play, This End Up. He writes both stage plays and screenplays.
