Staged Readings

A Classic Theatre presents four staged readings during the 2025/26 season. Each performance begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Living, 1795 Old Moultrie Road in St. Augustine.

Considered by some to be the "purest form of theater," staged readings don't have sets, props, or light cues, and use limited or no costumes. The actors perform using a script, and some necessary stage directions are read to help the audience understand what is happening. The actors rehearse each program, focusing on the script and their delivery to bring the playwright's work to life for the audience.

Eureka Day

Written by Tony Award-winning playwright Jonathan Spector, the play is set in Berkeley, California, where progressive ideals rule, and the school board of one elementary school strives to be inclusive and open to all ideas. When several students get the mumps, the community struggles and argues about what is right and what is true. The essential question of this play is "how do you build consensus when no one agrees on the truth?"

In reviews, the New York Times called this "one of the funniest plays" to open this year and "one of the saddest." Time Out New York said the play was a "comedy of manners [that yielded] to a serious probing of interpersonal responsibility." All reviews mentioned the surprising and brilliant humor in the play.
