On Friday, April 10, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. A Classic Theatre presents Kimberly Akimbo, performed as a staged reading.

Staged Readings

A Classic Theatre presents four staged readings during the 2025/26 season. Each performance begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Living, 1795 Old Moultrie Road in St. Augustine.

Considered by some to be the "purest form of theatre," staged readings don't have sets, props, or light cues, and limited or no costumes. The actors perform using a script, and any necessary stage directions are read to help the audience understand what is happening. The actors rehearse each program, focusing on the script and their delivery to bring the playwright's work to life for the audience.

Kimberly Akimbo

This three-act play, which premiered in 2001 and was described as a "sweet" and "quirky" is about a teen girl who dreamed of a life of adventure. Kimberly doesn't have an easy life: her family is dysfunctional, and she has a rare genetic disease that ages her prematurely. At 16, she looks like she's in her 70s.

Written by David Lindsay-Abaire, the play earned the 2001 LA Drama Critics Circle Award for writing. The play is considered a dark comedy, as Kimberly evaluates her life while dealing with an alcoholic father, a mother who is a hypochondriac, and (maybe) her first love.

NOTE: In 2023, a musical version of Kimberly Akimbo won the Tony Award for Best Musical. Playwright David Lindsay-Abaire collaborated in that version of his play.

Admission: $12.00 per person online; tickets can be purchased here.
