Dan Tyminski at the Waterworks

On Sunday, December 13, 2026, from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m., the St. Johns Cultural Council presents an evening with Dan Tyminski at The Waterworks. Tyminski performs solo, relates a few stories of his career, and sings his iconic songs.

Raised in Vermont by a family that enjoyed bluegrass music and took him to bluegrass festivals, Tyminski picked up the mandolin when his older brother left it at home. At 12, he first heard the progressive bluegrass band J D Crowe the New South and said he found "a love affair with a banjo." Once he got his first banjo, he never looked back and developed his singing and instrumental skills. He took up guitar at age 21, when he joined Alison Krauss's band.

Despite his love of the banjo, most of his early gigs were on guitar and mandolin, performing with the Lonesome River Band and then working with Alison Krauss and Union Station for three decades. More recently, Tyminski performs solo and leads the Dan Tyminski Band, a popular bluegrass band. He's also a prolific songwriter and has co-written songs with Kristian Bush, Ashley Monroe, and Chris Stapleton. He has won 14 Grammy Awards and has been named the Male Vocalist of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association—four times.

Most new fans know Tyminski as the man who accompanies George Clooney in "I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow" on the film Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? Since then, that song has been a part of his solo concerts. The rest of the solo shows are fluid with stories and songs chosen at the moment as he gets a feel for the audience.

Held at The Waterworks, a renovated historic building on San Marco Avenue, each concert is limited to 100 attendees.

Getting there: While the address is 184 San Marco Avenue, the only driveway on San Marco is exit-only. Access to the Waterworks is through the St. Johns County Main Library parking lot. (Use 1960 North Ponce de Leon in your GPS.) Coming from the south, you can turn into the driveway closest to the Waterworks, north of the Library.
