Ideas and Images: Visiting Scholars and Artists program from Flagler College presents the speaker series titled Race and the American South: St. Augustine in Context This series commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964.

March 4, 2014 presents the film, Freedom-Riders. This film documents the brave and harrowing tale of more than 400 Americans - both Black and White - that risked it all when they broke Jim Crow laws and rode together.

From May until November 1961, more than 400 black and white Americans risked their lives—and many endured savage beatings and imprisonment when they chose to simply travel together on buses and trains. They journeyed through the Deep South, purposely violating Jim Crow laws, the Freedom Riders sent a clear statement through their non-violent activism. They met with bitter racism and mob violence along the way, sorely testing their belief in nonviolent activism.

From award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson, Freedom Riders features testimony from a fascinating cast of central characters: the Riders themselves, state and federal government officials, and journalists who witnessed the Rides firsthand. The two-hour documentary is based on Raymond Arsenault's book Freedom Riders: 1961 and the Struggle for Racial Justice.

About the series: Flagler Colleges Ideas and Images series features an international composition of artists and authors, each introducing a fresh and creative component to the community. This season the series will host special programs focused on the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and St. Augustine's role in that era.
