The Lightner Museum presents Florida Before Flagler works by photographer Hugo Meyer, beginning with a free community open house on October 2, 2026, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The Exhibit

Henry Flagler's expansion along Florida's Atlantic Coast transformed the state in many ways. Before Flagler focused his efforts in the Southeast, photographer Hugo Meyer focused his camera lens on the people, towns, and landscapes in Florida.

Meyer traveled to Florida in the 1870s and 1890s, taking photographs that were published in travel guidebooks, giving the curious public images of St. Augustine, Palatka, and the surrounding areas. These photos captured the area and the people here shortly before the dramatic changes brought by Flagler.

The museum store remains open for the event. Wine is available, with a suggested donation to cover the cost.

The hero image is from the exhibit of photos by Hugo Meyer.
