Limelight Theatre: Nunsense

Limelight Theatre presents Nunsense, the off-Broadway musical comedy smash, from Thursday, September 11, 2025, through Sunday, October 5, 2025. The Sunday shows begin at 2:00 p.m.; all the other shows start at 7:30 p.m.

At first, Nunsense was a line of greeting cards featuring a sharp-tongued nun. Then, lyricist and author Dan Goggin turned it into a cabaret show. Finally, Goggin expanded the script into a full-length musical comedy with five great roles for women. The production became a must-do show for hundreds of renowned actresses; Sally Struthers, JoAnne Worley, Peggy Cass, and Phyllis Diller all performed in a production of Nunsense. It was the second-longest-running off-Broadway show in history, having been produced more than 8,000 times worldwide.

The script starts a bit dark with deaths resulting from tainted vichyssoise. The remaining nuns (who had been off playing bingo) must raise funds for the large number of funerals. So, of course, they create a variety show, and we're off on a singing, dancing, upstaging romp with twists, turns, and the inevitable squabbles. 

The show opened on December 12, 1985, and the play won four Outer Critics Circle Awards, including best off-Broadway musical, best book, and best music. 

Admission:

• General admission tickets are $35.00. The Limelight does not offer lower prices for seniors, students, or the military during musical productions.
• Deal tickets for the first Thursday of each production (Preview Night, September 11) and on one Tuesday (Terrific Tuesday, September 30) are $25.00.
• Student "Rush Tickets" are $15.00, when available, 60 minutes before the curtain.
• Box office hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., or purchase tickets online.

When: On Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, from Thursday, September 11 through Sunday, October 5. Sunday shows are matinees and start at 2:00 p.m. The performances on all other days begin at 7:30 p.m. Preview Thursday is September 11, and Terrific Tuesday is September 30. 

Where: 11 Old Mission Avenue, St. Augustine, Florida 32084. There is free parking behind the theater—enter from Old Mission Avenue and drive to the back to park in the lot on Bernard Street. Use the main entrance.
