From Friday, November 6, through Sunday, November 22, 2026, A Classic Theatre presents a fully staged production of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike at the St. Augustine Waterworks. The performances begin at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays, at 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays, and at 2:00 p.m. on Sundays.

The Play

Written by Christopher Durang, the play's main characters are Vanya, Sonia, and Masha, three siblings in middle age, and their lives, resentments, and potential futures. Two of them, Vanya and Sonya, live in the family home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, supported by their third sibling, Masha. A successful actress of a certain age, Masha visits with her younger, less savvy boyfriend Spike in tow and brings up plans to sell the house.

In addition to the expected sibling rivalries, themes include aging, the potential loss of a career, identities, and generational differences. The characters' names, the reference to cherry trees on the property, and other content reference Chekhov in several ways. You do not have to be familiar with Chekhov's plays to enjoy this dark comedy.

After performances in the U.S., the play opened on Broadway on March 14, 2023. The play closed after 189 performances, having been extended twice.
