A Flagler-Era Landmark

Located just northwest of Flagler College, Ancient City Baptist Church has been part of St. Augustine’s story since the late 1800s and is one of three churches in St. Augustine directly tied to Henry Flagler’s vision for the city. Like Grace United Methodist Church and Memorial Presbyterian Church, it stands today as a symbol of St. Augustine's religious ties and Gildled-Age philanthropy.

A Gift from Henry Flagler

Ancient City Baptist Church was officially organized on January 20, 1887, by a small group of 18 members who first met in the armory of the old Genovar Opera House.

Seven years later, Henry Flagler stepped in with a generous offer: a parcel of land worth about $5,000. But there were strings attached:

  • The church couldn’t mortgage the property.
  • A bell was never to be installed in the tower.
  • Construction had to be finished within two years.

Construction finished in April 1895 for just under $14,346. The original members dedicated the sanctuary on February 2, 1896 — debt-free, just as Flagler required.

The Romanza Chamber Music Series is a week of free concerts that are held at the Ancient City Baptist Church.

Architecture & Design

Romanesque Revival in the Ancient City

Ancient City Baptist Church's Romanesque Revival style design is known for its strength and simplicity. The tan brick exterior is marked by rounded doorways, arched windows, and a three-story tower topped with a cone-shaped turret.

A Closer Look at the Stained Glass

Inside the sanctuary, detailed stained glass windows add visual warmth to the space. During a major renovation in 2003, many of the original panes were restored or recreated with care. Retired glass artist Dee Tarrant led the effort, carefully matching the style of the originals to preserve the church’s historic feel.

Community Involvement

Ancient City Baptist Church continues to serve the local community through regular worship services, outreach, and community events. Visitors are welcome to attend services or stop by to view the architecture and stained glass and appreciate the historical significance of the building and the role the church has played in shaping St. Augustine.
