Nestled in what is now a charming neighborhood of single-family homes on Anastasia, Oglethorpe Battery Park is named after General James Oglethorpe. Despite losing a historical battle when the British Blockaded the port of St. Augustine in 1740, the British General fought bravely with his troops and set up a land bombardment, which is where the park is located.

Neither the blockade nor the bombardment was successful. The strong, yet resilient coquina walls of the fort withstood the bombardment and the Spanish were able to get supplies around the British ships. While Oglethorpe wanted to persevere and lead an attack on the walls of the fort, the rest of the British leadership decided that the danger of staying during hurricane season was too great. A monument was erected in 1938 to honor history and its troops.

Parking is free for visitors.
