A Classic Theatre presents a reading of an original play by St. Augustine resident Lance Carden, "Democracy and Its Demise," for one performance only on September 28, 2018. The reading of the play will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center. This event is free and open to the public.

Lance Carden bases his play on Henry Adams' 1880 novel, Democracy, which tells the story of an idealist heiress who tries to help a leading Senator in dealing with an inept and possibly deficient president. Carden brings this tale, which is so eerily similar to what's happening in the U.S. today, to life on the stage, and shines a light on the ways in which ambition, politics, and incompetence threaten our very democracy.

Jean Rahner, the director and founder of A Classic Theatre, has brought together a large cast that brings the historical characters to life, including Liz Myers, Evelyn Lyman, Margaret Kaler, Tom Rahner, Larry Hession, Lou Agresta, Kelly McTaggart, Guy Tillis, Harold George, Rich Nowell and Melinda Morais.

After the reading, a Q&A will be held, and the audience is welcome to question the playwright and to comment on their own reactions to the work.

A Classic Theatre is a non-profit 501(c)(3) theater company established to bring classic, historic and original theatrical work to St. Augustine.
