Words and Music Series: Backintyme

EMMA Concert Association presents another in their series of free events, "Words and Music at the Waterworks," on Thursday, July 11, 2024, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.

As Backintyme, storytellers and performers Frank and Mary Lee Sweet dress in clothing from centuries past and share tales about the people and events of a particular era and place. On July 11, at the St. Augustine Waterworks, Backintyme focuses on stories of soldiers and romance in St. Augustine during the late 1700s. In 1785 this formerly Spanish town changed from British back to Spanish law. It was a chaotic time — thousands of British residents began packing, Irish soldiers joined the few Spanish administrators to establish rule, balls were held, and the people continued with their lives, loves, families, and friendships as best as they could. 

Backintyme will share the history and the music, playing dance tunes, marching songs, and what passed for pop in 1785.

EMMA Concert Association's commitment to education and promoting the arts has led them to create the Words and Music Series, a mixture of music, spoken word performances, and theatre. Throughout the season, EMMA presents diverse artists in free performances at the Waterworks.

Getting There: While the address is 184 San Marco Avenue, the only driveway on San Marco is Exit Only, so it is not available to access the Waterworks. Access to the Waterworks is through the St. Augustine Main Library parking lot, on the opposite side of the complex. (Use 1960 North Ponce de Leon in your GPS.)
