The Accord Freedom Trail and Civil Rights Museum hosts an afternoon and evening commemorating the civil rights workers and events in 1964. The commemoration takes place on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at St. Paul AME Church, and features two presentations:

  • First, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., a viewing of the film, Passage at St. Augustine, and a discussion with the filmmaker, Clennon L. King.
  • Second, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., Robert Swan, a college student activist, who was in St. Augustine during a pivotal moment in 1964.

The Film, Passage at St. Augustine

Clennon King, an award-winning documentary filmmaker, journalist, and historian from Boston, conducted years of research on the civil rights campaign in St. Augustine during the 1960s. His 60-minute film, Passage at St. Augustine, includes archival footage and photos, and more recent conversations with the campaign's St. Augustine participants. King hosts a discussion about the film, which focuses on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assistance here in St. Augustine.

Robert Swan's Discussion and His Brother's Photos

At 6:30 p.m., Robert Swan discusses his experiences here in 1964. He and his brother, Nick, traveled through the segregated South in 1964, visiting St. Augustine and several other cities. They were witnesses during the "Swim-In" in the pool at the Monson Motor Lodge, and were there when harsh chemicals were dumped into the pool near the young, Black protestors. The brothers took color photos of that event and their meeting with Dr. King.

On June 18, Robert Swan discusses the experiences he shared with his brother in St. Augustine, including meeting Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Hear his stories and see some of his brother's photos—some will be on display.

Light refreshments will be available.
