"Opéra Mystique" is a combination of two performances — Sāvitri, an Indian-themed, one-act chamber opera by Gustav Holst, and The Medium, a two-act dramatic opera with dialogue and music by Gian Carlo Menotti.
The story of Sāvitri revolves around the love between a husband and wife who are faced with the knowledge that an upcoming death within a year's time will be bestowed upon them. With dreadful anticipation, Sāvitri hears the voice of Death one night as her husband's predetermined destiny finally calls. Having a religious background that allows for one wish pertaining to herself, she is instructed to refrain from requesting anything on behalf of her husband. With that said, she pleas for a "full life," and as a result, she tricks Death and sets them both free.
The Medium revolves around a con-artist fortune teller who, along with her daughter and mute servant, prey on grieving clients who lost a loved one. While "talking to the dead" one evening, Madame Flora believes something supernatural touched her. As a result, she is driven towards insanity as the impact of deception begins to haunt her.
