On Saturday, February 20, 2016, the Florida Park Service and the Fort Mose Historical Society will present Castillo by Candlelight: Flight to Freedom at the Castillo de San Marcos.

In this special after-dark Castillo event, visitors will learn about African-American heritage from the perspective of a Freedom Seeker escaping to St. Augustine and Fort Mose. Guided tours will detail the hardships endured by the African Americans who sought refuge in the area in the 18th and 19th centuries. Along the way, visitors will meet re-enactors portraying characters there to help the Freedom Seekers make their way south to freedom in Spanish Florida, as well as some hoping to return slaves to their owners in the northern English colonies.

Tours are approximately 45 minutes each, and will depart from the ticket booth at 6:00, 6:30, 7:00, 7:30, 8:00, and 8:30 p.m. Tickets are available for advance purchase at the Castillo de San Marcos box office or by telephone at (904) 829-6506.

Admission: Adults, $10; children (ages 15 and under), $5; children under 5, FREE.

When? Saturday, February 20, 2016; tours will begin every half hour from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Where? The Castillo de San Marcos is located at 1 S. Castillo Dr. in St. Augustine, FL 32084.
