In the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, the Castillo de San Marcos will host a special Castillo by Candlelight event called St. Augustine Strong. The fort will open its doors for free on the evening of Saturday, October 22, 2016, from 6:15 to 8:30 p.m., for a special evening celebrating St. Augustine history.

The city of St. Augustine has withstood numerous sieges, fires, and storms since the settlement was founded in 1565. The Castillo was built out of coquina because of the resiliency of the natural coquina stone, which could absorb the impact of cannon balls. After the Castillo was built, the city was able to defend itself from further attacks.

This special Castillo by Candlelight event will celebrate and honor the people of St. Augustine and their resiliency over more than 450 years of history.

This is a nighttime event, so some spots of the Castillo will be quite dark. Guests are advised to use caution and are welcome to bring flashlights to the event.

Admission: FREE

When: Saturday, October 22, 2016, from 6:15 to 8:30 p.m.
