The Castillo de San Marcos National Monument has announced a multi-year cannon preservation project with Texas A&M University that will begin its first phase on June 7, 2018.

This five-year project will restore the 25 iron cannons that are currently in place at the Castillo. The cannons will be shipped to the Conservation Research Laboratory at Texas A&M to receive treatments that will protect them from ongoing corrosion due to exposure to the elements.

In the first phase of the project, 14 cannons will be lifted by crane from the Castillo's gun deck and transferred to a barge for transportation to Texas. This will take place on Thursday, June 7, 2018. The fort itself will be closed on that day for safety reasons.

The Castillo will offer special interpretive services on the Castillo grounds at no charge during the June 7 closure, including talks by park rangers, exterior walking tours of the fort grounds, and ongoing displays and demonstrations on the fort's South Green by the visitor parking lot.

Admission: The Castillo will be closed, but the special activities on the grounds will be available for free.

When: All day on Thursday, June 7, 2018.

Where: The Castillo de San Marcos is located at 1 S. Castillo Dr. in St. Augustine, FL 32084.
