Over his 50-year career, his songs and albums have consistently been charted on The Billboard Top 200. He has won two Grammy awards, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.
Russell has collaborated with artists such as Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Joe Cocker, and Glen Campbell, Willie Nelson, and the Rolling Stones. He has recorded songs in a variety of musical genres, ranging from rock to country and from bluegrass to R&B and blues.
Leon Russell began playing the piano at age 4 in southwest Oklahoma. At age 17, he moved to Los Angeles, where he played in clubs and built a reputation as one of the best session musicians in Hollywood. Songs he has written have become classics, such as “Superstar,” “Delta Lady,” and “Hummingbird.”
At the height of his popularity as a rock musician, Russell turned to country music, releasing the album, Hank Wilson’s Back, in 1973 and partnering with Willie Nelson in “Heartbreak Hotel.” Their collaborative album, One For The Road, won a Gold record and a Grammy Award.
