Royal Knighting Ceremony
Monday, April 6, 2020, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Isabella Gardens
The Royal Knighting Ceremony is performed every year during Easter Week by the St. Augustine Royal Family to bestow knighthood upon residents of St. Augustine who have been selected based on their good civic deeds. St. Augustine residents portray the royal family in full costume and conduct the ceremony. Each honoree is presented with a medal, a plaque, and a sword-to-shoulder "knighting" by the current Royal Family Queen Mariana. The heritage event takes place from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 6, 2020, at Isabella Gardens on St. George Street.
Who is the Royal Family? The Royal Family is made up of St. Augustine residents who represent Spain’s Royal Family in 1672 — Queen Mariana, King Juan Carlos, and Princess Margarita Maria. This family was in power at the time the Castillo de San Marcos was commissioned to be built. The Royal Family of St. Augustine travels to out-of-town appearances in period dress to represent the city and promote its history and heritage.
