Tropical Tennis Tournament

This wooden racquet tennis tournament recalls St. Augustine's Gilded Age tournaments, with players encouraged to dress in 1890s attire.

Please Note: This event is from 2017

Harbour Island Tennis will be hosting the Rotary Club of Coastal St. Johns Annual Tropical Tennis Tournament Thursday through Sunday, April 21 through 23, 2017. This tournament is based on the wooden racquet tournament plays that were held behind the Alcazar Hotel & Casino in the late 1800s.

The 2017 version of the historic outdoor tournament that was the first tennis event of the year back in the Gilded Age will be true to its origins, with participants encouraged to play in 1890s attire and only with wooden racquets. All proceeds benefit The Rotary Club of Coastal St. Johns and its local and international charities.

The original tournament wrapped up with dancing and festivities on the wooden tennis courts, a tradition that was expanded by Henry Flagler to become a gala celebration including a 25-piece orchestra and a banquet at the Ponce de Leon Hotel. This year's tournament will finish up with a Gala at the Fountain of Youth on Sunday, April 23, 2017, at 5:00 p.m.
