First group of enslaved people seek sanctuary
"Eleven enslaved Africans – eight men, two women and a nursing child – escape from the Carolinas and arrive in St. Augustine. Governor Quiroga grants their request for sanctuary, sees them baptized in the Catholic Church, and hires the men as paid labor at the Castillo de San Marcos. He also refuses British demands to return the escapees."
