A demonstration of local poetry writers and talented storytellers, the Ancient City Poets Showcase will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday, September 11, 2021 at the Art Studio of St. Augustine Beach.

Featuring local poets Ben Atkinson, Cassandra DeGraff, Michael Henry Lee, Colleen Michele Jones, Jamie Lynn Stanish, Kimmy Van Kooten, Robert Waldner and Lee Weaver, the showcase offers the microphone to a loosely knit patchwork of poets.

The Ancient City Poets have been meeting monthly since August 2009 to share their work with the community and each other. Their open mic series offers poets of all skill levels an opportunity to share their written pieces in a supportive environment.

The showcase on September, 11 2021, will be the group's official local observation of the global event 100 Thousand Poets for Change.

Started in March 2011 by Californians Michael Rothenberg and Terri Carrion, 100 Thousand Poets for Change is a global poetry and arts movement with an emphasis on peace, justice, sustainability and education. Each September, the organization dedicates one day for poetry reading events worldwide. The first event, held September 24, 2011, boasted more than 700 events in 550 cities and 95 countries, making it the largest poetry event in history.
